Heritage Bridge Restoration: Lime Repointing, Parapet Rebuilds & Bat-Safe Conservation.

We recently completed a comprehensive conservation project on two historic stone arch bridges, one spanning 30 metres and the other 9 metres undertaking a meticulous programme of structural repair, ecological safeguarding, and traditional masonry.

The first phase involved the careful removal of deteriorating cement mortar from both bridges. This non-breathable material had compromised the integrity of the original stonework, trapping moisture and accelerating decay. Our skilled team painstakingly raked out the cement by hand, ensuring the underlying stone remained undamaged and ready for restoration.

Before repointing could begin on the larger 30m structure, we engaged a licensed bat ecologist to assess the site. Evidence of bat activity beneath the arch required a sensitive and legally compliant approach. Working closely with the ecologist, we implemented a phased exclusion process to safely encourage the bats to vacate. Once the area was confirmed clear, we installed temporary lime mortar and hessian coverings to prevent re-entry, allowing us to proceed without disrupting local wildlife.

With the bridges cleared and prepped, we repointed the entire structures using traditional lime mortar. This breathable material is essential for the longevity of historic masonry, allowing moisture to escape and preserving the character of the stone. In tandem, we undertook significant parapet rebuilds, sourcing locally scorched stone to match the original aesthetic and ensure visual continuity with the surrounding landscape.

The final stage of the project focused on structural consolidation through gravity grouting. We drilled a carefully planned grid of injection points across the bridge decks, methodically introducing a lime-based grout to fill hidden voids and stabilise the internal fabric. This technique not only reinforces the structural integrity of the bridges but also extends their lifespan while maintaining their historic authenticity.

This project exemplifies our commitment to heritage conservation, ecological responsibility, and traditional craftsmanship. By blending modern engineering precision with time-honoured techniques, we’ve helped ensure these vital crossings will continue to serve their communities for generations to come.
