Mountain Path Repairs on Ben Nevis for the John Muir Trust.
Our Hand build team is proud to have partnered with the John Muir Trust to undertake essential mountain path repairs on Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the UK. This project aimed to preserve the natural beauty and integrity of this iconic landscape while ensuring safe and sustainable access for the thousands of visitors who hike its paths each year.
Our team focused on critical interventions, including stone blocking and revetment, to guide hikers and prevent erosion. Fifty tonnes of stone was lifted by helicopter to key locations on the upper part of the mountain. By strategically placing stone blocks, we created clear boundaries that encourage walkers to stay on the designated path, thereby protecting the surrounding fragile habitats. Additionally, we constructed robust revetments to stabilise the path and prevent further degradation.
In the more challenging sections, we implemented stone pitching techniques, laying stones in a stepped formation to provide a durable and accessible route. This not only enhances the walking experience but also minimises the impact on the environment by reducing the likelihood of path deviation.
Through these efforts, we are helping to safeguard Ben Nevis for future generations, ensuring that its trails remain a testament to the harmony between human activity and nature.
