Derry Dam Bridge repair Mar Lodge

Derry Dam Bridge Repair and Adjustment, Mar Lodge.

Our Bridge and Boardwalk team successfully completed a complex bridge relocation and abutment rebuild for the National Trust for Scotland. The Derry Dam bridge originally built in 1959 had been closed for ten years due to erosion of the supporting abutments and river bank from floods.

The projects scope involved meticulous planning from the outset, the remote location require that all the tools and materials were to be flown in by helicopter. The installation required that the old bridge to be lifted and supported on temporary scaffolding before being rotated into its new position further up the river bank. This was to allow us to gain extra ground on either side of the banks to build the new strengthened abutments.

The new Gabion basket and  abutments were constructed from locally sourced stone from a local quarry next to Derry Lodge. The old steel beams were to be mounted onto Oak bearers and tied down with 20mm steel rods fixed through the gabions.

The team managed to finish this project on time and with minimal impact to the surrounding environment. The finished result is a testament to our sympathetic construction methods when dealing with a very sensitive site.
