New Path Network at Abriachan for the Woodland Trust April 2025.
We are proud to have completed a substantial new path network for the Woodland Trust at Abriachan, nestled along the picturesque shores of Lichfield Ness. Designed to improve access while respecting the surrounding environment, this 400-metre trail winds through steep terrain, requiring meticulous planning and expert construction to ensure its durability and usability.
Given the challenging landscape, the path was carefully built using a small 2.7-tonne excavator, with power barrows employed to transport materials efficiently. To establish a solid and lasting foundation, the entire pathway was laid on Geo-textile before being constructed with crusher run material, then capped and compacted to create a smooth and stable surface.
One of the project’s key priorities was addressing previous flood and landslide issues. To prevent future erosion and enhance drainage, substantial ditching was installed along the entire path. Additionally, 300mm and 450mm culverts were strategically placed to manage water flow, ensuring the trail remains intact and accessible in all conditions.
Beyond the pathway also included the installation of a small car park at the top of the trail, designated for those working on the land. A pedestrian gate has been installed beside the main entrance, allowing easy access for visitors while keeping vehicle traffic restricted to those maintaining and managing the site.
Through careful engineering and sustainable construction practices, this new path network enhances accessibility while preserving the integrity of the landscape. Whether exploring on foot or enjoying the scenery, visitors can now safely navigate the area thanks to thoughtful design and resilient infrastructure.
